Carroll Architects has been involved in numerous projects at Holy Cross Church Killea which is a protected structure of national importance. Works have included removal of cementitious based renders and re-plastering in breathable lime renders, internal renovations, structural remedial works to roof trusses and repairs to the bell tower.
This project required a degree of architectural archaeology and detailed analysis of the delicate structure to determine its original roof formation and construction. The complete renovation and partial reconstruction of the building involved many traditional construction methods such as lime plastering, natural slate roofing and carpentry work.
The project also extended to renovation of a millpond and other water features which involved specialist pressure grouting of stone dams to achieve a watertight structure while keeping original stone facings and avoiding the need for complete reconstruction.
Formally laid out as three bed-sit units, the building was reconfigured to its original form as a three-storey townhouse. The works involved replacement of all building services, replacement and restoration of windows, re-plastering, re-slating and reconstruction of a fragile brick chimney in accordance with conservation principles.
